More Matching Babies

Its fun to put our two little red headed babies together at the same age to see how alike they look. The first one, is Marin, obviously, we have not made Owen wear the pink bloomers! Soooo chubby, I love round babies.

Owen, wearing the Best Baby shirt again.
Marin (look at that round belly!)

Owen likes to eat his hands.

Footprints

We were given a gift certificate to our local pottery and paint shop. I played the "Village Midwife" for some friends, and did their birth education and postpartum care and as a thanks they gave us this wonderful gift of getting the kids footprints done. I love these little feet.

Matching Babies

This is Marin at the moment of birth

And this is Owen at the moment of birth (and this is a bad picture of me, so pay attention to the baby).

This is Marin the day after she was born, she had more hair

And this is Owen the day after he was born, he had a dimple in his chin. Isn't it fun to see how much they look alike?

Owen's Jam Bucket

This is Owen's Jam Bucket. It was rescued from the recycle bin when I was still working at the bakery. We have used this bucket for just about everything, holding beach toys, watering plants, and now bathing a baby!
Raspberry jam, blueberry jam, strawberry jam? This baby is just so sweet.

Battle of the Species

So when Grandma Cheri was here we got a bird feeder. Can you guess who is eating the bird seed?
This is Marin's BIRD feeder and she is defending it with water, and yelling.
And a sign--"NO SQUIRRELS ALLOWED!"

Would you like to know who is winning the battle? Well first they removed the lid from the bucket that held the seed. Folks let me just tell you this is not an easy lid to get off the bucket, in fact we used to use it for our dirty cloth diapers several years ago, it was chosen because it would not let any smell sneak out...ITS REALLY TIGHT!!! Well once we realized it was the squirrels that were removing the lid we set something very heavy on the lid, so they chewed up the rim of the lid, you can see all the white bits of the lid and the black bits are the sealant rubber for the lid...

And finally when we did not add any seed to the feeder the squirrels took their final revenge and broke the string on the feeder.

Marin is so mad at them...

and Owen doesn't care.

Natalie Merchant Shines Through the Clouds

(A rare posting by Todd)

One of my pet peeves as a father and as someone who values the arts is the way that so much pablum and nonsense gets waived in front of our faces in the name of entertainment. As our society has become increasingly driven by consumption - that is, everything has become commodified so that it is pushed to be bought or sold - we have had our senses dulled for quality art and we have learned to settle for a rather low bar for what passes as art. What’s worse is that we have become more accustomed to accept "art" as entertainment instead of something that we participate in, learn from, and get inspired by. It’s as if we were all sedated and our minds were re-wired to swallow the shallow and mindless poor quality art as a means for turning off our minds and especially our own creative imagination. Of course, this dulls the emotions as well. Thus, entertainment has replaced art, where entertainment equals passive, mindless emotional appeasement.

For this reason and a few others, I have a nauseous reaction to almost all forms of children’s music that I hear these days. There’s something deep in me that acknowledges that while children’s ears might perk up to different style of music, there ought to be some level in which really good children’s music also appeals to the adult imagination as well. However, this adult appeal isn’t my main issue. My bigger concern is how something called children’s music might have the capacity to enhance my kids’ lives. Does it have the ability not to merely entertain, but more importantly, to draw my child in and open up her mind to creativity and reflection in a way that causes both wonder and enrichment? I know, I know, it’s a whole lot to ask of something as simple as children’s music. And the truth is there is almost none of this happening in the mainstream these days. But every once in a while something comes along that bucks the system, and we get something that is truly wondrous and engaging and, yes, fun.

That has happened recently with a new double CD by Natalie Merchant called Leave the Sleep - click READ in lower left to learn about the project. (I’ve been a fan of N.M. since her days with the 10,000 Maniacs, so I was already predisposed, you might say.) When Holli’s mom was visiting a couple of weeks ago, she brought us a copy of Leave the Sleep, and we haven’t stopped listening to it. According to the liner notes, Merchant decided to draw on the classical children’s poetry that her daughter has enjoyed in her first several years. Additionally, the recordings cover a range of ethnic styles of music giving you an Americana-immigrant feel. And these tunes tap into the lyrically rich poetry in a way that makes you want to listen to the music more intently and to dig up the poetry itself. But perhaps the most compelling thing about Merchant's creative artistic concept is that it’s simply very good music that makes the ears and the mind happy.

In addition to the CD itself, Natalie Merchant’s website has a nice interactive framework for learning about the project, listening to selections from the CD, and even for reading the poems themselves which inspired the songs (click READ, WATCH, LISTEN). We highly recommend this CD. Oh, and I should also say that our daughter’s favorite tune is “The Dancing Bear” - she would want you to know that.

Visit From Grandma Cheri

Finally Grandma Cheri arrived. Ohhh we had such a good time!

Marin loves reading with Grandma but she also loves to snuggle her little brother.

Look who started smiling while Grandma was here

Owen and Grandma loved sitting on the porch each morning to give mommy some extra rest. Ohhh he misses his morning Grandma time, and mommy misses that last hour in the morning.

Marin got some swimming lessons. She is getting very good at swimming thanks to her daily lessons from Grandma.
By the end of her time with us, we really wore her out. Poor Grandma.

A Grandma Visit

Holli's mom is here! Yeah Grandma has come from Missouri and is here for almost 2 weeks! She gets to meet Owen for the first time. He likes her right away.

A Saturday drive out to one of our favorite spots. Marin didn't want to be in the actual picture so she just stood in the background and acted creepy.

We went to the beach on Sunday. She and Marin spent a lot of time digging in the sand and swimming in the water. They had a lot of fun together that day. Marin is smitten with her Grandma.

The girls!

Blueberries!

We made it out to pick berries! Yeah! We had a great
time and got a whole gallon.

Owen stops for a snack since he couldn't snack on berries. We just plopped ourselves down in the middle of some berry-bushes and hoped that the berry bugs didn't get us.
